24. day - 18/06/2014 - , Ground cable

Top of the ground cable
Fixing the connector to the top of the ground cable
Once the connector was complete, we still needed a great idea how to fix it. The problem was that we could not reach the bottom of the ground cable to attach it to the copper connector, because our arms were too short to do that. The extender was broken and we could not find one in Port Vila. And then the idea came. Of course, we need to fish! We took a line and a hook for fishing in the bilge. We managed to hook it into the upper part of the bottom ground cable and then we let the connector slip on the cable. We also cleaned the upper part of the ground cable from oil, and unfortunately we again ripped it apart. But this can be fixed with a screw later on , because it is easy to access.
Then, the connector was secured to the top of the ground connector with screws and later to the bottom of the ground connector, which was a quite a workout. We had to climb under the engine to do it and it was about an hour operation in total because the screwdriver did not really fit into the narrowing bilge. The connector had to be fixed to something not to move during sailing. Now we just needed a new bilge cleaning because the plasters we used on our hands due to our scars from the work ended up in the bilge again. We hope the vicious cycle will not continue.
If someone were to ask us how to replace a ground cable on a yacht, the brief response would be to put the boat to the mainland and cut a hole into the side of it.

25. day - 19/06/2014 - , Making new suncover

Making new suncover
The side of our new suncover was completed. Eric took the measurements of the top cove as well because the new suncover will consist of two parts.

26. day - 20/06/2014 - , Finishing the bilge cleaning

We found the plaster
In the morning we cleaned the bilge of the boat. We had to fish for the remaining pieces of the plaster.

We went shopping and prepared the boat to leave Port Vila. The locals are crazy for the FIFA world cup. A local company called Digicel put a giant projector so everyone can watch the football. Some locals are out at 3 am to watch the game. This monitor is on the hill just opposite of the boat, so we can hear what is happening.

We discovered another huge shopping center (Leader Price), kava soft drinks are also sold here. The city has a shop (Kava Emporium), where one can get kava in all kinds of flavors (eg coconut), but these are expensive and specifically intended for tourists. In the evening we wanted to visit a bar next to the Chief Nakamal, but it was closed. Along the way, someone suggested to see a white light illuminated bar (it was approximately 100 meters from the Nakamal). It was very authentic, just locals with spitting men and ladies. We still do not understand why they spit. People in Fiji never spit during drinking.

For dinner, we ordered a large pizza at a local restaurant where we were the only guests, but the curry was delicious on the pizza.

27. day - 21/06/2014 - , Around Efate: Mele Bay and waterfall

Finally, we got out a bit from Port Vila. We aimed the Mele bay, five miles west of Port Vila. During the trip the temperature of the engine behaved well.

We introduced ourselves to the next boat in the harbor area. There were young marine biologists on board who were studying and collecting various data for processing. Then we walked to the Mele waterfalls.
The Mele Falls is a beautiful waterfall system with terraces. The entrance fee to this area is 2000 Vatu per person, but well worth checking out the waterfall where you can swim in the lagoons. To get up to the top of the waterfall, one has to climb the waterfall itself with helping ropes on the hills and terraces.

28. day - 22/06/2014 - , Around Efate: Hideaway Island

Rotor with Hideaway Island and new sun protector
There is a tiny island called Hideaway at Mele Bay. It is a tourist paradise and a marine reserve as well, where the snorkeling is pretty good with lots of coral and fish. Boaties need to pay the island fee upon entering it (1250 Vatu per person). The most interesting thing here is the underwater post office (three meters below the water surface). The mails come in a waterproof envelope and at one pm a diver goes down to empty the post box almost every day (Sunday he did not go).

In the afternoon we walked (about half an hour from the coast) to the Secret Garden, which is an open air museum (admission 1000 Vatu per person). Here we learned a lot of interesting things about the history of Vanuatu and about the local culture, traditions and tales. There is a lot to read so you can spend hours here.
In the evening we went to the Beach Bar restaurant and there was a show on by Sunset Circus. Here we met other sailors from the anchorage.

29. day - 23/06/2014 - , It is heavily raining

Continuous rainfall meanwhile the boat is heated by computers. Not that it was not warm enough. Despite of the humidity and heat we still prepared a banana cake.

We had a sunset bathing at the Mele Bay after this rainy day. The wind became southerly, but very weak, so the berth is still good here, there is a little swell though. The wind is forecasted to be south easterly tomorrow..
